Cornet Info & Rambles!

Some info on my history with FFXIV and Cornet's name and stuff... Cornet's past (that I have thought of so far anyways,) her personality and recap a bit of the expansions and her various feelings during them! (Which is the long, especially rambly bit. lol)

Also! Realized other day, oh shit, there are still some folk around who're more behind than even I was... Last thing I want to do is spoil someone, ack! So I have done my best to hide (long as the background you see under the cut is white! so can be highlighted to see the text) and mark spoiler space where there's some spoilers for EW and ShB. I have done same to other posts too! So long as careful as you scroll, should be all good. ❤️

My FFXIV History

As a FFXI player, I followed news closely and first played during the open beta... such as it was. And then, well, we know how things went. Then it was pretty much ftp, and I got a copy for $10 from Walmart. Started having a lot more fun with it and paid even to get legacy status (yes, my name IS in the credits :D) Sadly, however, with a lack of people to play with, I was never able to complete the storyline. (But did least get to do some of Hildebrand!)

My original Cornet was on Besaid, which then was merged to become Balmung... had a lot of XI friends though from my LS heading to Excalibur, so they suggested moving. Thus 1.0 Cornet still resides there, on Excalibur. (And is currently in start of Stormblood, finally. lol)

My main Cornet, who largely my RP is more based around is on Adamantoise (aka Turtle)

Why 'Cornet'?

My FFXI character on Ifrit server was originally named Marona, but a server merge to Odin left me in need of a new name... so I went from one NIS character to another: Cornet, from Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (aka Marl's Kingdom)

When XIV started up, other than briefly in a beta using Marona, it felt weird to be anything but Cornet and... I just gave up being creative and borrowed the character's last name: Espoir (Which is french for 'Hope'... very suitable for a WoL. XD) Sadly, poor XI Cornet is now Korunet... cause went to play with friends on Asura... RIP her name ;A;

So she has been Cornet for a very, very long time now. Changing it to be lore compliant would be beyond WEIRD and feel so... utterly wrong at this point. lol SO. Cornet she will ever remain. XD And thus I have headcanon to try and account for the oddity instead. lol

Cornet's Past

I haven't determined many details as of yet, but (to part deal with the odd name and part other reasons >.>) though her mother is a Lalafell, I think I've settled on that she was adopted by this Lalafell Mom. Living in La Noscea and with pirates... doing their piratey things (LOOKING AT YOU SASTASHA FFF) her origin is unknown and as she is on the taller side and little more shapely than lalafell usually appear, her mother suspects she isn't purely lalafell, though what exactly her other half IS remains a mystery.

The only thing the orphanage where she came from had about her was a name she'd arrived with as a baby. While it does suggest elezen influence, that's really the only clue. Her Mom decided not to just rename her in case one day it did turn out to mean something (and Cornet was a really cute name! >.>) BUT she did give her Lalafellen name inspired from it in case she did ever feel like she wanted it. (Coruru Coru or Koruru Koru... I'm still trying to decide if I like C's or K's for it. lol) It went unused though, beyond the nickname "Coru"... mostly as used by her mother (family? gotta still decide if she has MORE than just a mom haha) but to anyone she gets close enough to she might share it one day.

Her life was... pretty insignificant. She remembers the calamity, though was still a teenager then. Upon reaching adulthood, she decided it was time she started trying to find a place for herself in the world. Showing an aptitude for magic, she started learning to be an arcanist at the guild in Limsa. Watching ships come and go in harbor, she more and more started to wonder about lands beyond and felt an awakened itch to explore.

And then, YOU KNOW, fate happened and Scions happened and Ascians and all that. XD Her first trip to Gridania sparked her interest in conjury and quicky found it was her calling, able to heal and help people far beyond what the arcanist's magic could provide. And came under the tutelage of Raya-o-senna, becoming a white mage.

In her spare time she also started to learn some crafts, having learned some weaving related skills as a child from her mother, it became her main craft, but leatherworking and goldsmithing became side interests. Along with a dabbling with some botany. (She also DOES cook, but I wouldn't count her as CUL, cause it's mostly for herself and friends/family she cooks and bakes. She doesn't consider her skills to be much but passable, but she's fairly good at it really. Cookies, cakes and sweets are her favourite thing, cause she can gift them to those around her.)

Jobs

White Mage is her usual 'job' of choice. Before Warrior of Light (or Darkness), before Scion, she is a healer foremost. She has, however, dabbled with some other fighting types/magicks. She's a pretty proficient red mage, but with that being Alisaie's THING she doesn't often break it out, not wanting to risk pushing Alisaie to be even MORE reckless to out do her or something.

Arcanist she long ago set aside, but certainly hasn't forgotten. She inevitably has learned a bit of thaumaturgey, but especially now with no lack of mages in the Scions, she hasn't pursued it further. Archery she's dabbled with a lil' too.

BUT in the end... Dancer. She was enchanted watching the dancers in Limsa, but didn't really expect it to be something she could do. Rarely unwilling to at least TRY something, it surprised her when it did CLICK. She enjoys it a great deal, loving how it feels a little like being able to let loose a bit... but still she's able to heal and support a bit, when healer habits die hard. It's the job stone she's most likely to pull out if it really seems like powering healing magic won't be needed.

(I have pondered whether to canon Paladin at all... I'm up to 86 and it fits well with white mage and sword play of red (PLUS A CERTAIN SOMEONE is a PLD, DNC, WHM... which makes it TEMPING let me tell you!) BUUUT idk. I'm not sure still it's enough... HER as such, though is only tank I'd EVER remotely consider. lol)

SO TL;DR for time being m'set on: WHM main, DNC and RDM when feels it won't encourage Alisaie to get more competitive. lol

(And for the amusing record, FFXI Cornet is RDM main and second main DNC. (WHM is 99, but shhh I don't tell anyone haha) BLM and THF are also maxed and enjoyed. XD Don't recall what else I have leveled off top of my head derp lol BUT YEAH. DNC just kinda ACCIDENTALLY became my second fave on XI, just as it's creepin' on being on equal footing to second fave with RDM on XIV. GO FIGURE. Though I hide WHM on XI (cause I don't wanna get dragged along on it... I main healed as a pink mage that I am a very DONE healer on XI XDDD) WHM on XIV is like SO much Cornet's identity now... mmm irony.)

Cornet's Personality

She's genuinely kind and caring to almost a fault. Emotions live on her sleeves when she's not attempting to hide them. Cheerful is generally her default state of being, but there are times she certainly uses it to mask her troubles. She'll get on other's cases for hiding their feelings, but she can be bad about doing it herself, though it tends to lead to actually physical hiding, since it's difficult to really hold things in for her. She's especially prone to it when she's worried it will cause other's worry when they have their own problems. She will often put other's troubles before her own. Cornet does realize she needs to practice more what she preaches and reach out... but she still struggles, her protective and caring nature ever at odds with this wisdom.

Where some might complain about handing out soup or tucking blankets around others, ever the 'mom friend' type, these little acts come natural to her. BUT yeah, she mom friends a lot, ever checking on if someone has slept, they've eaten, IT'S COLD HERE, WHY NO HATS??? etc. Despite, there are times she's not entirely good at always applying these things to herself either, particularly on the sleep front. (Especially as time has gone on, stress and bad dreams make sleep more difficult.) Though she would certainly LIKE to be able to sleep more and better. Largely she is quite practical, other than her love of long dresses, such as her much loved Ishgardian style gowns. (Though does have some other outfits she is known to don on occasion.)

Despite her giving and helpful nature, she isn't utterly gullible and has learned to watch for those seeking to take advantage of her. She can be at times too patient for her own good, but even she does have her limits. She isn't afraid to show her exasperation on occasion, likewise, she can be, albeit rather gently, sarcastic. She'll tease a little on occasion too. She's slow to anger, and is far more likely to be DISAPPOINTED in you than ever actually angry. If she did ever explode in anger, it would be a shocking sight indeed. She's empathetic to other's troubles, often feeling deeply for their pains.

If you know the things that cause her embarrassment and tease her, she's easily flustered. (Such as, I can imagine Thancred for some time after HW enjoyed asking her if Ser Aymeric had asked her out for dinner again. SUCH FLUSTER.) She also can only take so much praise as well, before she turns quite red. She doesn't really think of herself as trying to be a hero, but none the less, has come to accept 'if the shoe fits' and that it is what it is. She'd still never refer to herself as such. EW Spoiler: (Highlight to view!) (Zenos trying to suggest she was playing a hero annoyed the heck out of her. She's never tried to 'play hero' to her. For same reason healing was her calling... caring and helping people is baked into her very nature.) /End Spoiler

She does at times struggle with the weight that sits on her shoulders, but as she's grown closer more and more to the other Scions, the burden definitely feels more manageable than it once did. No matter how tired and stressed she is, she tries very hard to not ever take it out on anyone else. Bad dreams and anxiety definitely rear their head from time to time, the events of ShB and Endwalker especially leaving a mark. What keeps her head above the water is certainly her friends... being around those she cares about keeps her upright.

EW Spoiler: (Hence why post Endwalker she's struggling... everyone is split apart and she found herself alone. Everyone had their own plans and have gone in separate ways without her... the 'home' feeling of the Rising Stones is gone... though home truly is the people, but still... it sucks and she's feeling it. (And some goddamn trauma thanks to Zenos on TWO counts... the battle has left her struggling to conjur at the moment and nightmares of dragging herself through snow to save G'raha and Alisaie in the nick of time plagues her no end... not to mention the horror of the final days in general AND all the nightmare fuel that was ShB she didn't have even really time to process... YEAH GOOD TIMES.) /End Spoiler

Feelings Towards the Scions

Those lost and moved on:

Minfilia - Greatly respected her and the work she did behind the scenes for them all. Her oft said words, "For those we have lost and those we can yet save," Cornet has come to embrace utterly. She misses her presence sorely.

Papaylmo - Another presence that's been sorely missed. She didn't know him especially well, but always felt for him and his struggling patience when it came to Yda.

Lyse - Since the two's return after the banquet, she'd gotten a niggling something wasn't right with her, but that Yda wasn't actually Yda was quite the surprise. From there though she got to know Lyse far better than she'd ever known "Yda". She's very proud to see how far Lyse has come and considers her very much now a friend.

The remaining three original Scions... all gave her a similar feeling for some time: disconnect. She always liked them and cared, of course, but always felt a lil' distant and disconnected to them, especially Urianger, so often retreating to the Waking Sands. Something that progressively changed, bit by bit over time. To point they are all ever so dear to her.

Thancred - Ah, Thancred. At first rather taken aback by his flirtations and other such behavior, she progressively warmed up to him to the point now of being quite comfortable in his presence. And though she's always had a great deal of trust in him, it's feels more solid than ever as he has commonly become the group's main tank and thus she his healer. He still manages to exasperate her from time to time, but now it is ever so fond exasperation. Though few can fluster her more than he.

Y'shtola - Although always respected, it took a bit of time for her to truly read Y'shtola better, as her signs of affection are often rather shrouded in what can seem to be a coldness. Cornet has come to appreciate her lack of mincing words and the calmness she handles most things thrown her way. While once Y'shtola wasn't really the first she'd bring any troubles to, now she wouldn't hesitate.

Urianger - Of the three, Urianger was the one she never really felt she knew much at all at the beginning. Though she went trekked back to the Waking Sands so often to speak with him, he always seemed so aloof and distant. It wasn't until she met with him along with Alisaie she began to see hints of who he was beyond the hard to follow words. It was, however, seeing him again in the First that truly she got to know better the man behind the goggles, so to speak. She certainly noticed how he's opened up and was pleasantly surprised to find the warmth and deep caring that had been seemingly hiding. She was a bit disappointed in him over matters of secrecy, but could never be truly angry at him.

Alphinaud - How far he's come! Cornet is ever so proud of him. When she first met him, she found herself often cringing at the arrogance he showed. While she NEVER would have wished what happened with the Crystal Braves upon him (or anyone) the growth he's displayed since then has amazed her and she constantly finds herself in awe of it. He's like a younger brother to her and she'd do anything to keep him and his sister safe.

Alisaie - Though close to both of the twins, Cornet couldn't deny there is something else there when it comes to Alisaie. Though also like a younger sister, she's also one of Cornet's best friends. She enjoys Alisaie's company a great deal, though the age and experience difference keeps her from being able to speak to her about some matters. She's both flattered and concerned over Alisaie's desire to surpass her, given it tends to result in her acting recklessly.

Krile - If there was one Scion Cornet was most alike to, it would be Krile. Sometimes she feels like they are sort of kindred spirits, Krile displaying similar "mom friend" like behaviors and having similar reactions to things as Cornet does. She's glad to be getting to know her more and more.

ShB 5.0-5.3 Spoiler: G'raha - It's hard to put what he means to her in just a few sentences. Their initial friendship had been short lived, as G'raha shut himself away in the tower, and she often wished she could have had the chance to really get to know him better. She thought of him often though, what with the Crystal Tower ever in view from Revenants Toll. It feels still sometimes amazing to her, a dream even, that he's here with them now, much less all the things he went through to come to this point. He's become so quickly one of her best friends and there's a connection there she cherishes ever so much. To her, he's HER hero. (There's much more about her feelings written in various places in my journal. lol)

Estinien - He was hard to quite like even at first, but the cracks were soon visible as Alphinaud and she traveled with him and Ysayle. She respects him deeply and knows he'll always have her back. A little like Thancred, she often though finds herself regarding him with fond exasperation, though for much different reasons. (Such as that lopsided pony tail of his! If he didn't always tower over her, even seated, she would fix his sorry attempt!)

Continuing Story

(Aka some comments about the various expansions, especially ShB and eventually Endwalker when I get to it.)

Blahblah, joined the Scions, Crystal Tower (and when they moved to Mor Dhona, she def always thought of a certain someone locked inside every time she looked at the tower ;A;) and the coils with Alisaie... then course the bloody banquet happened. (Nanamo's death really hit her hard, as she was quite fond of the lalafellen leader and hated she was dragged off before being able to even try to help her with her magic.)

AND then Heavensward... where she definitely started to feel closer to Tataru and Alphinaud. (At the start she often felt still a bit like a stranger amongst the Scions at times, something that course begins to change as the writing gets better lmao) (Gotta comment more here later about our fave dragoon, Iceheart and course, Papalymo ;A;)

And in Stormblood she likewise grew closer to Alisaie, the girl becoming Cornet's best friend/younger sister she never had kinda thing. (Can't say much more about SB as it's been AWHILE. Just starting over on Excali on my alt so.)

THEN THE PATCHES. And the voice and her friends being taken out, which is definitely a happening that really MADE her realize now just how much they had ALL come to mean to her, especially Alisaie. Her being ripped away was the worst and why when she arrived in the First, she was the first Cornet sought out.

OKAY. SHADOWBRINGERS. Got a whoooole lot more to say/headcanons about this.

And JUST in case, don't keep scrolling if you haven't finished Shadowbringers. XD

----------------

SO. The big one. THE EXARCH. She wasn't sure what to think at ALL at first, but same time, despite the evasiveness, she couldn't ever sense anything from him that felt like he didn't mean WELL. Still, there was something about him that NIGGLED at her. A vague familiarity. And his denial of having ever found anyone, much less G'raha in the tower also sat weird with her.

(Skippable side story:

Some point early on, in pure headcanon land when leaving the ocular... she decided to have a nosey up the tower more, trying even to search some of the side passages, but after hours she still found nothing. Not only did nothing seem any different from when she last left (but for the obvious activity on the bottom floor) but nothing was also there. At all. No clones. No monsters. No tear to the World of Darkness. Nothing. Utterly nothing. If the tower (the upper half anyways lmao) was empty, then it HAD to have been after she'd been inside then, right?

What troubled her more was even the lack of... anything else. She wasn't sure what something else could BE exactly, but... still surely just... something? Some evidence of it's rightful caretaker. But no. Not even a scrap of parchment... nothing to suggest G'raha had ever been here. It felt like some bitter irony that a historian left no history. Unless the Exarch unknowingly had SOMETHING, but she wasn't sure she could really ask given the prompt dismissal of her concerns.

She finally gave up, sitting in the middle of the throne room and found herself in tears. It was hard to know what it could mean, but the thought that perhaps even the tower had been stolen from an awakened G'raha... the very notion hurt. She did get caught in the act of being still in the tower by SOMEONE, which she promptly apologized to profusely and beat the heck outta there.

Something still niggled at her. Then her niggle began to grow MORE. Until a new theory began to roll in her head: her friend was the only one who was meant to be able to control the tower because of his blood, right? So unless the Exarch's merging had something to do with how he could control it... then... what if he WAS G'raha? Rather, more like, it was his body. Goodness knows, he was the right shape and height to be. Not to mention he did sound awfully similar too, from what she could remember, if just less... arrogant. What if something had happened to his mind? His memories? Twelve knows what the tower could have done to him. She had no idea how to even begin to look into the theory short of going after the Exarch's hood. There were more important matters needed her thoughts.

END. ...tl;dr she got progressively got suspicious of who the Exarch was... though never guessed it was G'raha lying to her. lol She started to wonder if it was him, without him realizing, basically.)

The light thing very much started to frighten her, wondering if her small size even will affect her ability to possibly contain so much light, but she truly wanted to save this world and the kind people she'd come to know. So she pressed on, hoping somehow things would work out okay.

And then finally Mount Gulg! (HOW SHE GAVE HIM A *LOOK* THAT STRAINING NECK COMMENT :|) Despite suspicions, she was getting fond of the Exarch and was ever so worried when he vanished and found him passed out. She didn't say anything, but TOTALLY recognized those words. Still, it could have been some weird coincidence, so she remained silent. Pressing him now was hardly the time and she certainly ALSO caught that comment about being awakened. Filing it all away for AFTER Vauthry... it was time to head up and then... STUFF HAPPENED.

She was far too stunned and horrified (and in pain) at first to realize how fake his words had been about taking the light to visit other worlds and using her. Y'shtola calling it out sure helped, but also left her more confused. And then someone's hood blew off and all her crazy suspicions were suddenly not so crazy! Except it wasn't just his body that was him. It seemed it WAS G'raha Tia and he was about to die... for her. She was totally in tears at THIS point, cripes.

...and then Emet and gun happened. And of all things she was just suddenly so ANGRY. I mean, sure he just stopped G'raha from killing himself for her, BUT also he SHOT him. In the BACK.

Despite scarcely able to hear or see clearly at this point, she still tried to drag herself forward to him, ever the healer. She HAD to try to heal him. To save him. And DAMN if she didn't try to funnel some healing magic to him. Couldn't, but tried. And then Emet between them and then he TOOK G'raha. She was LIVID. Just so livid. And then she was overwhelmed by the light, probably mumbling to her friends to go save him.

Then she awoke... and was in the realm oh god that wasn't a dream, was it? But I wish it had been. Surprised her a lot she was in one piece. And her brain was SPINNING at the truth surrounding G'raha, but one thing for sure, she had to go rescue him. And heal him. ...THEN give him an earful.

Mmm So lesse... Urianger... she wasn't really angry at him. Mostly disappointed? She could tell he was put in a heck of a difficult position though, so forgave him pretty easily.

There's prolly more important things I should ramble about and I've already hit on a ton of NOT so important things, but lol anyhoo. Emet is gone, G'raha saved (OF COURSE, TIS GOOD TO SEE YOU AWAKE ;A;) and light GONE. HURRAH! (But that cracking soul, light puking horror is gonna stick with her.. and her nightmares, for awhile.)

Def min she had a chance she did some healing for him... and hugged him SO much. (And saved the giving him an earful for another time, cause oh god, EMET WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM???)

This is long. Whatever. Um. Skipping to end, OH how finding G'raha during the patches turning more and more crystal just... the healer/mom friend in her was SO worried. And then course, she finds him just... in pain and the growth going crazy in late 5.3 and she's just almost in tears seeing it and him like that. Totes tried to least use some magic to soothe the pain.

And then fricking him turning into crystal. She'd certainly understood for awhile he was considering using extra spirit vessel. And despite all the hope she tried to hold onto, god she was scared and how she couldn't but burst into tears when the crystal finished taking him. Even though he was in the vessel and in her hands, it still just... friiiiiiiiiiick. (...and thus it was about here she started to realized that caring about him had become CARING SO DAMN MUCH)

You bet she rushed to the tower. And will get into this later more.

AND YEAH. HE WAS OKAY. APPARENTLY HIS YOUNGER SELF ACCEPTED HIM AND SHE WAS SO RELIEVED. And yeah. Right.

Endwalker: Um. ...OW. (TBC later.)
